This is the junior seminar assignment given on 9/17 and due in class on 9/22. It shouldn’t be difficult, but since I explicitly recommended that students come to the reference desk if they have trouble, I thought I’d go ahead and share it.
You should have an idea of some of the secondary sources that you’d like to use in your literature review. Since the purpose of a literature review is to situate your work in a particular context of the field and to engage an existing conversation in and about that context, one of the aspects of your sources which you need to explore is the responses and engagement they have already garnered. To that end, we’ll explore two methods of finding secondary sources which build on or interact with your existing sources in some way.
Pick one scholarly secondary source you have already identified related to your tentative topic.
If the source is a book (or a chapter in a book), search for scholarly reviews by entering the title (without punctuation and in quotation marks) and the author’s name into the library’s catalog search (https://library.goshen.edu/) and filtering the search to show only articles. (For best results, pick a book which is more than two years old.) Bring permalinks for at least two reviews to class on Tuesday.
If the source is an article (or a chapter in a book), search for other works which have cited your source by searching for your source in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/<) and clicking the “Cited by {some number}” link under the entry for your source. Bring bibliographic information (title, author, journal (if applicable)) for at least two of these sources to class on Tuesday.
